A planned business and industrial park in Fairview Heights could bring as many as 150 new jobs to town.
The Fairview Heights City Council narrowly approved a resolution Tuesday night to invest $28,500, or half of the engineering expenses needed to develop a 33-acre business/industrial park in the city. The development is located adjacent to Arrowhead Building Supply off Illinois 161.
Fairview Heights Economic Development Director Mike Malloy said the total development would cost an estimated $1.2 million. He said the area is one of two in the city zoned for industrial use and would be mostly used for warehousing.
"We see a lot of warehousing that could go in there with counter sales, parts and distribution centers could go in that property, Malloy said. "It's a precious commodity we anticipate there is potential for 100 to 150 people could be working on the acreage once it is fully developed and provide a pretty good source of employment."
Malloy also said that the city is working to create a new tax increment finance district that would encompass 144 acres, including the neighboring MetroLink station located at the corner of Illinois 161 and St. Clair Avenue. He said the city also wants to develop a mixed-used residential commercial development center around the MetroLink station.
"Hopefully the city could create TIF in this area by July of this year," he said. "The city has applied for an enterprise zone status through the state. We should know something concerning that in September of this year and that certainly will give the city a lot more ammunition to assist anybody who wants to try to do something there."
