St. Louis-Mo, Saturday June 20th, The St. Louis Chinese American News hosted a reception that attracted some of the region's most influential politicians and Asian business leaders. The reception was held at the Mandarin House Restaurant, and featured authentic Chinese dancing, a demonstration of martial arts, a buffet of Chinese dishes, and a presentation on the demographics and the economic vitality of the Chinese community in the St. Louis area.
Francis Yueh and May Wu, of the St. Louis Chinese American News said, "This reception is the first of what will be an annual event. We want Missouri's politicians to know that the Chinese community is not invisible. In fact our current population exceeds 55,000 in the St. Louis area. The majority of the Chinese and Asian populations in St. Louis are well educated professionals, creating jobs, and helping to grow the area's economy. We want to be seen as positive contributors to St. Louis' diverse society. In addition, we want politicians to respect our voting potential".
Among those in attendance were Rev. Douglas Parham, vice president of the Ecumenical Leadership Council; State Senator Jill Shupp; County Assessor Jake Zimmerman; State Senator Maria Chapelle-Nadal; Jennings Mayor Yolanda Fountaine Henderson; State Representative Joe Adams; State Representative Tommie Pierson; John Scates representing US Sen. Roy Blunt's office; Dan Allen of KXEN/WGNU radio; Charles Jackson, former Missouri Public Safety Director; Wesley Bell, Councilman in Ferguson; LaRhonda Wilson, professor at St. Louis Community College; Sanda Rosenblum; and Lynn Wallis, owner of On the Run gas stations. Prominent Chinese business leaders and entrepreneurs included George Tsai, Eric Chen, Jason Jan, Attorney Tony Gao and Creve Coeur Councilman James Wang. |
