The Olive Business Association is waiting for one of the most important days in its short
history. Plans are that on Friday, April 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the Royal Bank parking lot on Olive the first banner announcing "The Olive Link" will be
erected. The OBA is hoping for members of the University City High School band, as well as City officials, to be part of the gala ceremony.
"Olive Link" banners will be hung along Olive Street Road from Skinker to Highway I-170 as soon as necessary clearances from all authorities have been
received. All members of the OBA were eager for the first
banners. Royal Bank won the honor.
Business directories will be published soon. Covers will be in color, printed pages will be in black and
white. Directories will be available from OBA member businesses.
Exciting projects are underway for "Experience the U. City Olive Link," the expo to be held on Monday, May 31, the Decoration Day holiday, in Heman
Park. Businesses, organizations and individuals who would like to rent booths for the expo should contact the City of U. City for
information. Booth spaces are already being leased out, so do hurry.
Jobs for youth in the U. City area were the subject of a talk by Chris Blumenhorst, Assistant Principal of U. City High
School. A job board has been set up at the school, listing jobs available and jobs
wanted. Classes and seminars are presented to train for
jobs. Volunteers in any of these capacities would be welcome.
Thomas Moton, Assistant City Manager of U. City, described improvements for Phase I of a beautification project to be started soon along Olive Street
Road. Bicycle lanes will be marked for 10 1/2 miles along various city streets, including
Olive. About 130 trees will be planted. Decorative pedestrian street lighting will be placed around many intersections, sidewalks will be improved, and much more attention will be paid to the entire
area. Phase II will wait for a later date, but Phase I will bring substantial change.
Other activities of interest around town were discussed. Included
were a program to be held soon at Webster University honoring Mr. Charles Klotzer for his creation of and years of work with the St. Louis Journalism
Review. Proposition B, the school bond issue on the ballot April 6, which provides money for building repairs with no increase in property taxes was mentioned, along with the River Des Peres Watershed Coalition, which will function to protect the stream running, in U. City, along Olive Street
Road. To learn more about these issues, be at the next OBA meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 6:00 p.m., at the Heman Park Community
Center. You will be welcome.
