The China National Orchestra will perform at Powell
Symphony Hall on September 3.
The world renowned
China National Orchestra will make a rare performance at Powell Symphony Hall on September
3 at 6:30 p.m. "Faces of Love Toward the East" is produced by Gitana
Productions, a not-for-profit arts organization dedicated to bringing international music,
dance and drama to the St. Louis community. The event has the collaborative support of the
St. Louis Chinese Association.
"Faces of Love Towards the East" features 80 musicians performing a large
repertoire of folkloric musical works from various regions of China. The China National
Orchestra was founded in Beijing in 1960 and has traveled throughout Asia and around the
world during the past 20 years. The orchestra's premier St. Louis performance reflects a
current warming of business and cultural relations with China. St. Louis is the sister
city to Nanjing, China.
" 'Faces of Love Toward the East' presents a rare and special opportunity to
experience the largest and most prolific folk music group in China," said Cecilia
Nadal, founder of Gitana Productions. "I created Gitana to foster cultural awareness
and appreciation by providing opportunities for the St. Louis community to experience the
art of other cultures. This event is especially significant because of the diverse
alliances we have formed with many local ethnic groups, church groups and college
organizations to welcome the orchestra and make this wonderful event a success. "
A share of the proceeds from "Faces of Love Towards the East" will benefit the
Cameran Youth Chamber Orchestra, a St. Louis-based African American group that has
received international acclaim. The group is trained in classical music through residence
with the St. Louis Symphony Music School.
"Faces of Love Toward the East" featuring the China National Orchestra will
take place on September 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Powell Symphony Hal. Ticket prices are $25 and
