Lieutenant Governor Joe Maxwell named Community Service Commission Chair
Dr. Ching-Ling Tai appointed the only Asian-American member |

Dr. Ching-ling Tai, a teacher at St. Louis University High School, was
recently appointed as a member of the Missouri Community Service Commission. Her
appointment was recommended by Betty Sims, the State Senator from Ladue, and confirmed by
a 8-member committee. Her term of service is for three years. Dr. Tai has served the St.
Louis community for many years. She was the national vice-president of the Organization of
Chinese Americans as well as the president of the St. Louis Chapter, a board member of the
Chinese Culture Association, and served a wide variety of civic and community
organizations. Dr. Tai is the only Asian American member to serve on the Commission.

Created by the State Legislature in 1994, the 25-member Commission works
to foster an ethic of service in all Missourians, with particular initiatives on behalf of
the Corporation for National Service and through the AmeriCorps successful programs.
Lieutenant Governor Joe Maxwell was name as chair of the Commission. Maxwell stated,
"I am honored to now serve on the Commission, working to encourage volunteerism
throughout the state."

The Commission's initiatives have resulted in nearly 2 million service and
volunteer hours since 1994. Its projects have addressed diverse issues such as crime
reduction, tutoring at risk youth, mentoring, housing rehabilitation, service-learning and
emergency relief.
The Commission is part of the Community Development Division of the Department of Economic
Development.
