Monkey King is a popular mythological character in China - a favorite of children and adults alike. Monkey King can transform himself into seventy-two different things, from a fly to a temple. With one somersault over the clouds, Monkey King can travel 18,000 miles. His Golden Rod can stretch to Heaven or collapse to the size of a toothpick to be easily hidden behind his ear. The adventures of Monkey King are recounted in the Journey to the West, the tale of a Buddhist monk who made the long and hazardous journey to India to bring Buddhist scripture back to China. Journey to the West is considered one of the four classics of Chinese literature
Come to our workshops to find out why Chinese all love Monkey King, and you'll probably come to consider him as your friend, too. The Wonder of Chinese Opera - The Monkey King Workshop provides a perfect introduction to Chinese Peking Opera and a fascinating interactive program from pre-performance preparations to on-stage action.
Watch this amazing character come to life before your eyes through face painting and costuming. Learn Monkey King's special stage movements and facial expressions. The workshop will conclude with a short performance portraying how Monkey King disrupts a party in the Heavenly Palace. Children will be invited to participate in the performance.
