YO-YO MA TO PERFORM WITH THE SAINT LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN SPECIAL CONCERT ON SEPTEMBER 12

By Scanews Staff

ST. LOUIS, July 23 - Brilliant cellist Yo-Yo Ma will perform with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in a special event concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 12, at Powell Symphony Hall. Tickets to the one-night only performance range from $20 to $125 and are offered exclusively to Symphony subscribers through August 18. Tickets will go on sale to the public on August 19.

For this special concert, which takes place the night before the opening of the Symphony's 123rd season, the Orchestra will be led by Keith Lockhart, music director of the Utah Symphony and conductor of the Boston Pops. The program will include Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, which Mr. Ma performed in his first concert with the Saint Louis Symphony in June 1973.

"Yo-Yo Ma is a great talent, and our Orchestra has enjoyed a long and special relationship with him," said Dr. Virgnia Weldon, chairman of the Board of Trustees. "Having him here just before our opening weekend makes the evening even more exciting, and we hope our subscribers will take advantage of this opportunity to be part of a very special night."

Mr. Ma has appeared with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra many times over the years, most recently in May 2000. Applauded for his musical diversity, the multiple Grammy Award winner has recorded more than 75 albums, ranging from classical to bluegrass to newly commissioned works. His latest venture is the Silk Road Project, which promotes the study of the cultural traditions interconnected along the ancient trade route in Asia. This incredible initiative has inspired the musical collaboration of composers and musicians from Asia, Europe and North America, resulting in several recordings, including the recently released CD "Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet."

Keith Lockhart has served as music director of the Utah Symphony since January 1998, and led that orchestra in performances during the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. In addition, the popular young conductor and the Boston Pops, which he has led since 1995, have appeared on numerous television shows, toured extensively and released several albums. Mr. Lockhart appeared at Powell Symphony Hall in October 1998, conducting the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and this will be his first appearance with the Saint Louis Symphony.

The Symphony's season opener is 8 p.m. Friday, September 13, with guest conductor Roberto Minczuk leading the orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, Path
čtique. This coming season will spotlight all nine Beethoven symphonies and feature many acclaimed guest conductors and artists.
