St.
Louis Modern Chinese School
By Scanews staff
This fall, the St. Louis Modern Chinese School will offer MODERN CHINESE
(THE SIMPLIFIED ONE USED IN MAINLAND CHINA) language classes. designed
specially for Families with Chinese Children (FCC), children of other
American families in which neither of the parents can speak/understand
Chinese, AND AMERICAN ADULTS WHO WANT TO LEARN Chinese.
When the school was founded in 1997, Chinese was the only language spoken in
class. This made it a challenge for FCC children, and their parents, to
keep up in class. The Modern Chinese School now understands the importance
of having classes geared toward students who live in English-only families.
The classes will be taught in English-Chinese. In addition to teaching
Chinese, the classes will incorporate information on Chinese culture.
There will be two levels of classes. The lower level class will be geared
for younger children (at least 5 years old) who have not had any prior
language lessons. The focus would be on spoken Chinese, rather than on
written characters. The class will be held from 3: 25 p.m.-5:00 p.m. THERE
WILL BE TWO SESSIONS WITH A BREAK IN BETWEEN.
The higher level class is designed for children who have already had some
Chinese lessons OR MATURE ENOUGH FOR ACTIVE LEARNING, AND FOR AMERICAN
ADULTS WHO WANT TO LEARN CHINESE. It will include a Chinese-English
textbook. STUDENTS will learn the pinyin (ROMANTIC PRONUNCIATION)
system. THE CLASS WILL BE HELD BETWEEN 1:30-3:25 PM. AFTER THE TWO CHINESE
SESSIONS, THERE ARE TWO OPTIONAL CLASSES THAT RUN UNTIL 5:00PM AND
TEACH SUCH SUBJECTS AS DRAWING, CHINESE DANCING, SINGING, ETC.
The Modern Chinese School is hoping at least 6 students enroll in the new
classes. The tuition for each class is $ 140, plus a $20 registration fee.
EACH ELECTIVE CLASS COSTS $70 (MAY BE REDUCED DEPENDING ON THE NO. OF Students) . Language school will be held at Parkway
West Middle School. The fall semester begins Sunday, September 8TH. For
more information and/or registration, call Keshun Liu at 636 207 1129 or go to
