Dr. T. Leo Lo, former Principal and current chairman of the Board of the St. Louis Chinese Language School, was notified by the Board of Directors of the
Computer Measurement Group (CMG) that he is the recipient of 2002 A. A. Michelson Award. CMG is a worldwide non-profit professional society emphasizing system measurement and management. CMG has 24 chapters in North America and 9 chapters around the world. Each chapter organizes its own quarterly meetings and the CMG HQ organizes the annual conference for its members to share their experiences and report their developments. The Michelson Award recognize the recipient's pioneer contributions in the filed of measurement, and management of computer systems and networks.
The 2002 CMG annual conference will be held on December 9-13 at the Hilton Hotel in Reno, Nevada. The Michelson Award will be given out at the conference opening ceremony. CMG invites Dr. & Mrs. Lo and pays all travel, lodging and conference registration expenses.
Dr. Lo indicated that Michelson lifetime achievement Award is the highest honor in his field. It does not award every year. This award was established by CMG to recognize 19th century scientist, Prof. Abraham A. Michelson, who was the pioneer of developing various measurement techniques, some of which is still in use today. CMG Board of Directors issues a call for nomination to academic and industrial groups to nominate candidates. The Award Committee goes through two-phase evaluation process and recommends three finalists. The Board of Directors and academic and industrial representatives will vote. If the winning candidate does not receive a simple majority vote, there will be no award in that year. The evaluation places emphasis on candidate's original pioneer contributions and their applicability. The other evaluation criteria are leadership and volunteerism to candidate's professional. Michelson Award recognizes Dr. Lo pioneer contribution of the measurement and management techniques on computer networks; some of the techniques are still being used widely.
Dr. Lo has been a member of CMG since 1975 and served as Vice President for 4 years and as a Board of Director for 6 years. He established St. Louis CMG and led it for 21 years. Dr. Lo worked for McDonnell Douglas for 18 years and was elected the Engineering Fellow in 1987 to recognize his contribution in computer networking. St. Louis Chinese American Science and Technology conference gave Dr. Lo the Best Industry Fellow Award in 1988. Dr. Lo currently works for IBM as a network architect to assist customer's network design, measurement, and operational efficiency. In addition to his regular work, Dr. Lo has been serving an Adjunct Professor for University if Missouri - Rolla's Graduate Engineering Center in St. Louis. He teaches graduate classes and supervises student thesis.
Dr. Lo's most familiar voluntary work is to serve as the Principal for 15 years and as the teacher for 23 years for the St. Louis Chinese Language school. In addition to language school services, Dr. Lo was the national Vice President of Organization of Chinese American (OCA) and President of OCA- St. Louis chapter.
Dr. Lo indicated that this award is indeed a surprise since there are many outstanding scientists in the field of system and network measurement and management. However, he feels this award gives a positive image of Chinese-American. Dr. Lo's wife, Dr. Grace Shen Lo will take two days off from her super busy schedule to accompany Dr. Lo to accept this award on December 9 in Reno.
