Technology and Economic Development:
A Blossoming Partnership
Midwest Chinese American Science and Technology Association
2002 Annual Conference

Organization of Chinese Americans, St. Lois
Youth Leadership development Program

On Saturday, June 1st, the Young OCA held a Youth Leadership Development Program in conjunction with the Midwest Chinese American Science and Technology Association at the Westport Holiday Inn. Tanya M. Lee and Giles Li gave interactive lectures on the history of the Chinese American heritage, issues affecting the Asian Pacific community, and college planning leadership styles. There were also panelist presentations on different career choices.

During the presentation, there was an informative circle discussion on the Chinese American History Timeline. Tanya and Giles read out dates that were important in Chinese American history, such as the railroad workers, riots and hate crimes, and important civil rights dates. This allowed the participants to think about their family heritage and to be proud that they stood up for what was right.

Tanya M. Lee is the Director of Programs for the Organization of Chinese Americans at their National Office. She graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and was one of the first to receive a certificate from the newly established Asian American Studies certificate program. While at UM, she worked intensively with the APIA student community and now is extending that work with college and high school students nationwide through OCA.

Giles Li serves as the Director of Communications for the Organization of Chinese Americans. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2000 and currently sits on the board of DC Asians for Peace and Justice. In Fall 2002, he will begin a Masters program in Public Affairs at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He is also one-half of the spoken word duo re: verse, who released their first CD - "Regarding Verse" - this past February.

Founded in 1973, the Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc. (OCA) is a national non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization of concerned Chinese Americans. OCA is dedicated to securing the rights of Chinese American and Asian American citizens and permanent residents through legislative and policy initiatives at all levels of the government. OCA aims to embrace the hopes and aspirations of the nearly 2 million citizens and residents of Chinese ancestry in the United States as well as to better the lives of the 10 million Asian Americans across the country.
