Webster University has 60 Chinese MBA students here for eight weeks. All are students at Webster in Shanghai and Shenzhen, China. It was apparently very difficult to get visas for the students, but based on the good reputation of this joint MBA program and many graduates, all students were approved to St. Louis - the main campus of Webster and started their new learning experience in late May. Among 60 students, 24 from Shanghai, 8 from Shenzhen, Shanghai Bell sponsored 28 students. The Shanghai Bell students will be visiting St. Louis businesses such as Mastercard, Graybar, EDS and others.

The Joint MBA Progr am offered by Webster University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE), China is a Chinese-American cooperative teaching program approved by the Ministry of Education of China in 1996. This program is ranked No. 3 among 72 joint programs in China. Shanghai Education Department awarded it "Best in Teaching" last year. SUFE is one of the first nine universities in China to offer MBA programs. Offering MBA programs outside the U.S.A. is a significant feature of Webster University. The joint MBA program of these two universities strives to advance business education in China.

Since the MBA curriculum is standardized and uniformed, students in the Joint MBA Program take course at Webster University's main campus in St. Louis for one semester. Students are required to successfully complete all of their courses in order to obtain the MBA degree, which is awarded by Webster University. Through this program, Chinese students (and international residents living in China) can acquire the most current international business educational experience without travelling outside China.

The students are mostly middle and upper level managers from multinational companies. They are part time students, have classes in weekends. They are offered one semester study abroad in worldwide Webster Campuses. Webster wants to build a bridge to develop culture and business communication between China and the United States through this MBA international program.

Shenzhen Campus

Janny Liao
at Webster U. St. Louis main campus
In March of this year Webster University started their Shenzhen campus second class. Those students who are from Shenzhen and now in St. Louis are part of the very first Shenzhen class. Between the two classes, Shenzhen campus has about 60 students attending at the location in Southern China in Guang Dong Province.
Shenzhen is a port city whose cargo business has been growing at about 30% a year to the detriment of Hong Kong. Only 15 years old, the city was a fishing village in the late 1970's; now it has a skyline and population of about 3.5 million people. Imagine a city in Missouri growing from a few thousand to 3.5 million in a matter of 15 years.
The MBA Program is taught in Shenzhen in partnership with Shanghai University of Finance and Economic (SUFE) and uses classroom space provided by Shenzhen Business College, which is creature of the Shenzhen government. For now, both and Webster send professors to Shenzhen every-other weekend. Late this year, or the first of next year, the classes will be run every weekend for 9 weeks, just like Shanghai or any other Webster graduate program.
Janny Liao has been the Shenzhen manager since January of 2002. She's a graduate of our Shanghai MBA Program and has experience working with multinational companies, including AIA, the insurance company. Janny not only manages affairs in Shenzhen, but also is the point person when Webster University is negotiating new locations in China. She has been a leader in dealing with China University of Electronic Science and Technology in Chengdu. Webster University has an application with UEST now pending before the Ministry of Education in Beijing.
