(March 14, 2002) St. Louis, MO - President of Fontbonne College, Dennis C. Golden announced today that the institution has fulfilled the academic requirements necessary to change the name from college to University. The new name of the institution is Fontbonne
Unviersity.
"In addition to fulfilling the accreditation requirements necessary by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Institutes of Higher Education, the name change will reflect the continuum of improvement Fontbonne has achieved," stated Golden. "Fontbonne University offers personalized educational opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds who seek a quality educational experience. At Fontbonne University, we are committed to not only teaching our students how to earn a living but also to teaching them how to live a life," said Golden.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Thomas M. Gunn concurred by saying, "We fully comprehend that this change brings on new responsibilities for the board, staff and faculty as Fontbonne continues to progress."
The sponsoring body, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet also support the change in name, "Fontbonne University reflects the kind of change that has always characterized the mission of the institution 'to serve wherever there is a need,'" states Chancellor Stephanie Steuber,
CSJ.
The name change has been well received by faculty, students and alumni. "I'm excited to be a part of the first graduating class as a University. To me, universities have higher academic standards and subsequently better job placement opportunities," explained graduating senior and student government president Bryan Smith.
"This name change is a realization of what we as alumni knew all along - that Fontbonne has high standards for their faculty, students and curriculum," said the Honorable Eve Montgomery Riley, a 1995 Options MBA graduate.
Fontbonne University was established by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1923, as a college for women. In 1971, Fontbonne became a coeducational institution. Fontbonne University, a Catholic institution, continues the heritage, the mission and values of its sponsoring body, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The four-year university offers liberal arts, professional and graduate degree programs. The enrollment is approximately 2,000 students.
