Liao Mo Hsie Dance Group

Introduction

For years, dance art groups have worked in the north. The government sponsorship and local resources have an uneven distribution for the northern and southern parts of Taiwan. Under these circumstances, it is not possible for much development for dance groups in the south. However, Liao Mo-hsie inherits the spirit of Tsai Rei-yuei, a renowned dancer of the first generation, and Liao insists that all the young dancers should perform on the stage. Despite all difficulties, Liao initiated "Tainan Teenage Dance Group" in 1983. For all the dancers in the southern Taiwan at that time, the newly-established dance group was a hope. As the artistic director, Tainan Teenage Dance Group was re-organized into Liao Mo Hsie Dance Group after seven years of learning and improvement. With the new group, Liao hopes that they would be able to ascend to a more professional level, fulfilling self-transcending expectations.

Dance is an art of body movement. However, it needs soul to back up the performance. Body movements, sound, light, and props should be combined into one. In this way, the tension on the stage can be unfolded, the dimension of space can be broadened and the spirit of dance can be expressed. The presentation of the dance art depends on literature, aesthetics, music and other art forms. It is a versatile art performance in which the literary and artistic mind is expressed through bodily rhythm and the intersection of sound, light and illusions. It is aesthetic as well as social, which is the faith of Liao Mo Hsie Dance Group.

"On the stage, soul and body are together; body and props are in one. Then, the performance on the stage would not be confined to the limitation of space, and the dancers can perform without reservation. The intertwining soul in dancer's mind can be fully expressed." This is Liao's idea of this group. She thinks that dance art should not be confined to "dance skills"; it should be a combinative art performance of literature, aesthetics, music, light, and costumes, etc.

Since its establishment in 1990, Liao Mo Hsie Dance Group has produced new programs of dance performances every year. With professionalism and a sense of duty, the group persists in their own unique style and idea, sparing no efforts in promoting aesthetic education and soul revolution.
