The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), St. Louis Chapter held its
final session of the Leadership Development Program at the Conference Hall
of Missouri Baptist Medical Center. On the morning of September 21, 2002, participants from the St. Louis Metropolitan area attended a 3 hour
Leadership training program with BJC health care executive officers who
shared their career progress as models for aspired youth.
BJC health care system has 26,000 employees with 13 hospitals. It is the
largest health care group in St. Louis and works to provide the best
medical service for the community. BJC is renowned for its leadership and
innovation in patient care quality, safety and commitment.
OCA President, Matthew Yu, opened the seminar by welcoming all
participants and reviewing previous leadership seminars led by MasterCard
International and Monsanto Company. In this last series, three speakers,
Steve Lipstein, President and Chief Executive Officer; Mark Eusis, BJC
Senior Executive Officer; JoAnn Shaw, Vice President and Chief Human
Resources Officer, talked heart-to-heart with participants about their
career development.

JoAnn Shaw,
Mark Eusis and Steve Lipstein
Steve Lipstein graduated from Emory University with a Master Degree in
Health Care Management. His first Job was an assistant to an executive.
He considered his top three qualities in management are: Intellect, Work
Ethics (value), and Personality.
Mark Eusis holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the
University of Minnesota. He started working as an assistance to an
executive, then became a hospital administrator at the age of 25 in a
rural hospital. He is especially keen of taking on new challenges and
risks. He has successfully within 3 years turned Christian
Northwest hospital from a lost of $25 millions two years ago to a $2 millions
surplus this year.
JoAnn Shaw has a degree in Secondary Education. She started as a
receptionist at a hospital. At one point of her career, she had to accept
a pay cut in pursuing and learning new skills. That move eventually
paid off for her in a big way. She predicted that in the next 20 years,
there will be a great shortage in healthcare professionals. She made a
special note to encourage females to be assertive. Matthew Yu will be
working with JoAnn Shaw to enlist more minorities and to help them
developing career skills in healthcare professions.
Matthew Yu concluded the meeting by saying, "...the function of
leadership is to develop more leaders, not more
followers". To train community leaders among Chinese Americans was the mission of
the leadership Development Program. Matthew Yu and other OCA officers have
spent countless hours putting this program in place, and they are very
pleased to report the completion of the 2002 Leadership Development
Program.
OCA St. Louis Chapter will continue to provide training opportunities for Chinese American youth and to assist individuals in
their career development with the goal of discovering more leaders in the
future. As a group, we can work together to seize the opportunity to
change our community for the better.
