In the 22nd Great St. Louis National Black Belt Karate Championship (September 20- 21, 2002 at Merrimac campus of St. Louis Community College), the instructors and students from St. Louis Modern Chinese School (SLMCS) competed and won three first places of the divisions and one Ground Championship. Among them,
David W. Yan (substitute instructor of KungFu class, SLMCS) and Frank D. Xu (assistant instructor) won the first place in the self-defense division of black belt under 18 group;
David W. Yan won the first place in the traditional form division of black belt under 18 group; Loui Zhao win the first place in the traditional form division of under black belt under 13 group. In addition,
David W. Yan won the Ground Championship in the competition among the first placers of different traditional divisions of black belt under 18 group.
