Mr. Sherwin Liou has been living in St. Louis for almost thirty years. He is the founder of the award-winning Mandarin House Restaurant, now in its 25th year. He has been active in the social and cultural activities in the community in St. Louis and many other cities throughout the United States. Sherwin is a lifetime member of the National OCA and a member of the Board of Directors of OCA - St. Louis Chapter.
Sherwin has been serving the community tirelessly. Sherwin was the President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Greater St. Louis between 91-93 and 96-98. To help Chinese restaurant operators in understanding and keeping up with the public health regulations, Sherwin suggested to the County Health Department that the Health Awareness course be conducted in Chinese. His proposal was accepted and put in practice. He invited the respectful Dr. Ching Ling Tai to be the instructor. Now, more than a hundred students graduated and benefited from this training course. He cared for the education of the next generation with generous support to the St. Louis Chinese Language School. In addition, as the President of the Confucianism Society, he helped organized cultural exhibits in 2000 at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, St. Louis University High School, St. Louis Community College at Meramec, and St. Louis Magnet School with photos, books, and handouts on Confucius teachings. He supported and contributed to the Chinese American Forum magazine to promote the mutual understanding between Chinese and American cultures.
Sherwin came from South Korea. He enjoyed the company of Korean-Americans. He is a board member of the Hanhwa Association (The National Korean-Chinese Association). He was the President of Hanhwa Midwest Association for Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri in 1998. Under his leadership, he promoted the welfare for the members. Sherwin is a business leader in the City of Overland. In 1997, he received a business award from the City of Overland. He also involved in helping organizations financially by donating to Ellis Island Foundation, Senior Olympics, and especially Veterans of Foreign War for their sacrifice and defense for freedom.
Sherwin's most significant contribution to the community is being the National President of the Alliance for Preserving the Truth of Sino-Japanese War. With the cooperation and support of Global Alliance for Preserving the truth of Sino-Japanese War, Sherwin helped securing the independent film producer, Mr. Lou Reda in producing the documentary, "The Rape Of Nanjing", first premiered in St Louis in 1999 before showing in the History Channel. It was a major event in the West to focus the Japanese war crimes against humanity. In December of the same year, he went to Tokyo, Japan for the International Citizen's Forum on War Crimes and Redress. After the conference, he was on the front line marching in the demonstration rally in downtown Tokyo.
In 2001, Sherwin led a team to Shephard, Michigan to honor Minnie Vautrrin, known as the American Angel. She was the American missionary who protected more than ten thousand Chinese women and girls from the invading Japanese in the Rape of Nanjing. In April of last year, Sherwin and his wife Linda visited Beijing and presented the Video entitled "The Rape of Nanjing", the Mandarin version to The Museum of the War of the Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In 2002, he was invited to become the Board of Director of the Midwest Theological seminary in Wentzville, Missouri.
With this impressive and remarkable achievements and contributions for dignity, peace, humanity and justice, Sherwin is a role model to honor and respect.
