Yingxue Zuo melds ancient techniques from his home in China with contemporary Western practice. The influence of Chinese calligraphy is evident in his earlier prints and drawings, yet his bold lines have also recalled the marks of abstract expressionism. A new body of work, executed between 2001 and 2003 will be featured in the exhibition at the Sheldon Art Galleries.
Black dominates in Zuo's powerful new paintings that echo meteorological events and the geological and topographical structures of earth and stone. Using the materials of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy together with other media in new and unexpected ways, the artist applies layers of ink, oil, acrylic, latex and wax to canvas, creating rivulets, pools and cascading sheets of tone and texture. He has worked on a large scale for many years in printmaking but the paintings to be shown at the Sheldon Art Galleries are a departure from his earlier subjects and styles. An artist who throughout his career has experimented with process, color, technique, materials and subject matter, Zuo brings to this new body of work an exciting expansion of his visual vocabulary.
Zuo has lived in St. Louis since 1990, and travels regularly to China, conducting tours and workshops. He is Associate Professor in the Department of Art at St. Louis Community College and was an Adjunct Faculty Member at Webster University between 1991 and 2000. Zuo holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in painting and printmaking from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Northeast Normal University, Changchun, Jilin Province, China. His works have been exhibited throughout the United States and China and are in a number of University collections including Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, and Webster University, among others. His paintings are also in the collection of Mark Twain Bank (now Bank of America) and the Central Fine Art Institute, Beijing, China.
