It
is our sad duty to regretfully announce that Saint
Louis County Executive Buzz Westfall succumbed to a
serious infection and passed away at 4:46 p.m on
Monday, October 27, 2003.
The thoughts and prayers of all St. Louis Countians
go out to the entire Westfall family, including his
wife, Laurie, and their children, Mark, Steve and
Kristin.
Buzz Westfall was elected County Executive in
November 1990 and was re-elected three times, most
recently in November of 2002. Prior to
that, he served three terms as Saint Louis County
Prosecuting Attorney.
During his tenure in office, Westfall garnered high
praise for working to create jobs, to keep County
streets and neighborhoods safe and for ensuring that
County government was fiscally responsible. His
countless accomplishments included securing the
funds for a badly needed County jail without asking
for a tax increase. He refused to raise
taxes during his entire time in office. His
strong fiscal leadership earned Saint Louis County
an almost unheard of AAA bond rating which meant
millions of dollars of savings over the years. He
established three County satellite courts and
created the Metropolitan Education and Training
Center in North Saint Louis County.
One of his proudest accomplishments was the
establishment of a Saint Louis County shelter for
battered women and children. He also organized the
Saint Louis County Fair and Air Show which has
raised over $1 million for local children hospitals.
