3. Molly's First Teaching Job: Ya'an 10/27/2005

Molly and her mother

I applied for a teaching job in China, and I received a couple of offers. One of them sounds just like what I am looking for, so after doing some investigation to make sure everything is legitimate, I went ahead and took the position. I will be teaching middle or high school students - (it's all one big school) - and helping them speak and understand oral English. The town where I'll be working is called Ya'an, and it is in the Sichuan Province, which is where I was hoping to locate. It is a small town by Chinese standards, with a population of 150,000, definitely not a small town by American standards. It is about a two-hour bus ride from Chengdu, which is the largest city in Southwest China. Ya'an is situated near some big mountains, so hopefully I can do some hiking. Apparently, if I want to go running, the countryside is about a five-minute jog from my apartment. I will sign a one-year contract, and, if I like it, I can sign for another year later. I will get free Chinese tutorials, which is great.

I am excited and relieved that I can now stop being the college girl who mooches off her parents. I now have a job. Praise be!

Molly
