York, NY - August 17, 2005 ?A traditional celebration marking the
end of summer harvest, Chinatown New York City𠏋 Autumn Moon Festival
will be held on the actual day of the mid-autumn full moon, Sunday,
September 18, 2005. Before the full moon will light up the night,
a full day of activities and entertainment will take place from
11:30 AM to 5:00 PM on Mott Street between Bayard and Canal Streets.
Organized by the Committee for a Better Chinatown, the Autumn Moon
festival will have many cultural performances on a main stage, including
lion and dragon dances as well as martial arts performances. Visitors
can also enjoy free moon cake tastings and take part in the festival𠏋
annual riddle contest.
Also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Autumn Moon Festival
is a celebration of abundance and togetherness dating back to
China𠏋 Song Dynasty over 1,000 years ago. A mixture of Thanksgiving
and Valentine𠏋 Day, the festival is a major holiday in China and
Asian communities all over the world, as well as Japan, South
Korea and Vietnam. Traditionally, the Autumn Moon Festival takes
place on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar.
This year𠏋 date is Sunday, September 18th. At this time, the moon
is at its fullest and brightest, marking an ideal time to celebrate
the abundance of the summer𠏋 harvest. Round mooncakes made of
flaked pastry are baked and enjoyed, ornate lanterns are displayed
and lovers are encouraged to come out of their homes to bask in
the glow of the full moon.
