聖路易社區大學(St. Louis Community College)與湖南省第一師範學校11月17日在美國密蘇里州聖路易市簽署合作意願書，將共同動兩校教育、學術和中美文化交流，聖路易社區大學校長Henry Shannon及湖南第一師範學校教授吳躍躍分別代表兩校簽字。依據這項合作意願書內容，聖路易社區大學及湖南第一師範大學兩校將共同推動師生互訪計劃，學術、教育交流計劃及舉辦文化活動以為增進彼此多元文化發展之相互瞭解。

歷史悠久的湖南師範學校前身有1000年歷史，培育出許多教育學者專家，南宋朱熹、清章太炎曾教授於此、中華人民共和國毛澤東主席曾在此求學和工作，該校目前有包括教育、文化、科學、工程和管理學等專業訓練項目，學生人數超過1萬5千名，其中9千人為全時學生。

聖路易社區大學系統有20個學院，56個大學科系，56個碩士系所和10個博士研究所，學生人數超過2萬人，聖路易社區大學目前與湖南師範大學建有教師交換計劃，每年互派出所兩為教授訪問和教學，吳躍躍教授即為今年湖南師範大學音樂系派赴聖路易社區大學之訪問教授之一，另一位訪問教授為英與系之王崇義教授。

SLCC Signs Sister College Agreement with Chinese Institution

Representatives of St. Louis Community College and Hunan First Normal College (Hunan, China) today signed a letter of intent to develop a cultural and educational relationship as sister colleges.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will:

• Explore faculty and student exchange opportunities and seek ways to encourage faculty members of the sister college to participate in cultural projects in the hosting country.
  
• Transfer educational materials, publications, course literature and instructional information.
  
• Host cultural events from the other country which may enrich or expand educational and cultural understanding and experiences of faculty and students of the sister college.

Primarily a teacher's college, Hunan First Normal College was founded more than 100 years ago. Important Chinese philosophers and scholars, such as Zhu Xi and Xhang Tiayan, have studied and worked there through the centuries. Chairman Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China, also spent several years studying and working at Hunan First Normal College. Today, the college offers 28 undergraduate and professional training programs in education, literature, science, engineering, and management. Of its 15,000-plus students, 9,000 attend full time. SLCC presently has a faculty exchange agreement with Hunan Normal University. The university consists of 20 colleges and offers 10 doctorate and 56 master's programs, and 56 undergraduate specialties. More than
20,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students attend the university full time.

St. Louis Community College is the largest community college system in Missouri and one of the largest in the United States. The college serves an area of approximately 700 square miles that includes the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County and portions of Jefferson and Franklin counties.

By head count enrollment, the college is the second largest institution of higher education in the state. Current credit enrollment each semester is approximately 32,500.

St. Louis Community College's three campuses, Florissant Valley, Forest Park and Meramec, are shaped by their urban and suburban communities, and many programs are planned for the needs and special interests of their surrounding areas. The campuses offer freshman- and sophomore-level college transfer, career and developmental programs, plus non-credit continuing education courses. Each campus was designed to serve an area population of 400,000 to 600,000. Because the campuses primarily serve local students, sites were chosen on the basis of commuter access, availability of public transportation, cost, size, utilities, environment, projected population growth and community interest.

The college also offers credit and non-credit courses through its continuing education programs. The courses, offered at more than 50 locations, represent program areas ranging from on-site career training at businesses, industries and government agencies to personal subjects to instructional television.

The South County Education and University Center, located at 4115 Meramec Bottom Road in South St. Louis County, provides a convenient location to accommodate the expanding enrollments in Meramec's service area. Nearly 4,800 students enroll at the center each semester.

The West County Education Center, located at 930 Kehrs Mill Road, serves the far West County communities in Meramec's service area. More than 3,800 students enroll at the center each semester. The facility has 17 classrooms and includes space for art, science and data processing labs.

The Downtown Education Center, located in the Joseph P. Cosand Community College Center, 300 S. Broadway, opened fall 1989 to provide educational services to the more than 100,000 people who work downtown. The center, which has three classrooms, high performance computer labs and meeting rooms, offers courses in business and management, personal and professional development, and IT technologies and microcomputer applications. The center is a Microsoft Solution Provider, a Microsoft Certified Partner for Learning Solutions and a Prometric Testing Center.

The William J. Harrison Northside Education Center, located at 4666 Natural Bridge Road, opened in 1994 to expand college services to the North St. Louis community. Programs and services available include general education courses, microcomputer applications, small business training, developmental courses, literacy training, assessment services, placement testing, financial aid and educational advising.

As a public coeducational institution created by area voters in 1962, the college is supported by local taxes, the State of Missouri and student fees. Students may enroll at any of the campuses.
