Washington, D.C. (March 20, 2006) - On behalf of Anheuser-Busch, Inc., David L. Kim, Director of Asian Marketing & Community Relations, presented a check for $7,000 to Sabrina Underwood, President of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association Educational Fund (AEF), in support of the 2007-2009 Anheuser-Busch Norman Y. Mineta Fellowship. The presentation took place at AEF's Annual Benefit Dinner on March 18th at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. The Honorable Norman Y. Mineta delivered the keynote address.
"It is especially fitting that Secretary Mineta is the keynote speaker at this year's dinner when AEF celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Anheuser-Busch Norman Y. Mineta Fellowship," said Underwood. "Secretary Mineta is a long-time supporter of AEF and an inspiration to the Asian American legal community."
"We are pleased to continue our commitment to the community through our support of the AEF and the Anheuser-Busch Norman Y. Mineta Fellowships," said Kim. "During the 10 years of this fellowship we have seen many successes. We commend all the fellows on their outstanding work for the community and thank Secretary Mineta for his unwavering commitment and leadership."
"One of the first real heroes I ever had the pleasure to come across as a young APA student in college was then Congressman Norman Mineta," said Eugene Chay, 1996 Anheuser-Busch Norman Y. Mineta Fellow. "Being the first Anheuser-Busch Norman Y. Mineta Fellowship Recipient will always be a treasured memory for me."
This year's benefit dinner was also held in conjunction with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) Southeast Regional Conference. The Conference, hosted by AEF's sister organization, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of the Greater Washington, D.C. Area, Inc. (APABA-DC), brought together affiliate members and supporters of NAPABA from Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida to discuss current issues in the law, centered around the theme "A National Vision of Asian Pacific Americans in Law and the Judiciary."
About AEFAEF, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, is the charitable arm if APABA-DC. Since 1993, AEF has awarded fellowships to law students who accept unpaid internships in the non-profit or public sector to provide critically needed services to the Asian Pacific American community and the Greater Washington, D.C. community-at-large. AEF funds these fellowships primarily through its Annual Benefit Dinner, which has become a marquee event in the community with over 300 attendees annually. Last year, AEF raised over $17,000 to fund four public interest internships. For more information, visit www.aefdc.org.
