Samson Wang, President
Taiwanese Association of America, St. Louis Chapter

        Dear Mr. Wang:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you and all of my Taiwanese-American friends for the invitation to participate in the event today. Unfortunately, my schedule has prevented me from attending.

While I am unable to be with you in person, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as I continue to do the work that you sent me to Washington to accomplish.

As a member of the Taiwan Caucus, it has been my pleasure to work in tandem with you to promote the needs of one of our most reliable allies in the Asian hemisphere. My work on the Caucus and my understanding of the needs of Taiwan have been enhanced and driven by your friendship and guidance over the past few years. Your input has made me a better advocate for Taiwan and the need for stronger and closer relations between Taiwan and the United States.

To do so, I have cosponsored legislation such as H.Con.Res. 69, which states that the President should abandon the "One China Policy" in favor of a "One China, One Taiwan Policy" that recognizes the Republic of China on Taiwan as a sovereign government; the President should begin the process of resuming normal diplomatic relations with the Republic of China on Taiwan; and the Republic of China on Taiwan should be permitted to participate as a full member in international organizations for which statehood is a membership requirement.

I thank you again for your kind invitation and want you to know how very much I value your continued friendship. You have a unique perspective on world affairs and I am grateful to be able to benefit from it.

        Sincerely,

        JOHN M. SHIMKUSMember of Congress
