The University of Missouri-St. Louis is "breaking new ground" in economic development, civic engagement and expansion efforts, accordingto Chancellor Thomas F. George.
George today delivered the university's 30th annual Report to the Community. The focus was on UMSL's commitment to education and the community. Examples include enhancements to undergraduate and graduate education, the opening of Express Script Inc.'s headquarters on the UMSL campus by spring 2007 and the university's partnership in the Wildwood, Mo., campus planned by St. Louis Community College.
George also outlined updates to the UMSL Master Plan, a series of improvements to the campus that include road and entrance enhancements; renovation of Benton and Stadler halls; completion of a new business, research and technology park; and a new building for KWMU (90.7 FM). The Master Plan also calls for a series of districts that group the campus' academic, recreational, athletic and arts facilities.
"We educate St. Louis, and these campus improvements go a long way in making sure our students have the best facilities in which to learn," George said. "Our economic development and civic engagement outreach only serves to strengthen the educational, career and social benefits of our students."
Other highlights of the Report to the Community included:
* The launch of UMSL-led $60 million collaborative initiative to increase high school graduation and college enrollment rates in eight St. Louis-area school districts. More than 6,000 seventh-graders entered Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, or GEAR-UP, last fall and will continue receiving services until they graduate high school in May 2011.
* George highlighted records in degrees granted and external funding. At the end of the 2005-06 academic year, 3,000 students graduated from UMSL - that number included 862 master's degrees and 58 doctoral degrees - all record highs for the university. The campus also achieved an all-time high of $28 million in external funding - a $3 million increase from last year.
* George also handed out UMSL Distinguished Service awards to: Dee Joyner, senior vice president of Commerce Bank; Deirdre Gallagher, a trial attorney; and Mary Ann Coker, a UMSL student.
