Two Things to Remember on Tuesday, November 7 Election Day

by Secretary of State Robin Carnahan

Jefferson city, Missouri - Election Day is approaching and it's your chance to make your voice heard. As Missouri's top election official, it's my job to ensure free and fair elections, and part of that includes helping registered Missouri voters stay informed so that their votes count. That is why I want to remind you about two things before you go to the polls on Tuesday, November 7.

        1) First, bring your identification. There has been a lot of talk over the past few months about voter ID requirements. Recently, a law requiring Missouri voters to show a government-issued photo ID was struck down by both the Cole County Circuit Court and the Missouri Supreme Court. This means that the voter ID requirements will remain the same as they have been in past elections.

Specifically, acceptable identification includes any one of the following: your voter identification card; your driver's or non-driver's license; your Missouri college, university, or vocational and technical school ID; or a recent paycheck, bank statement, or utility bill with your name and address on it. You can see the full list of acceptable identification at http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/voterid/.

        2) Second, your ballot will no longer feature a "straight party" voting option. Earlier this year the legislature and Governor changed Missouri law to eliminate the option of “straight party?voting which allowed voters to select all candidates of one political party with just one mark. This means voters will need to mark a vote for each candidate of their choice individually.

More information about voting and other election related issues can be found on our website at www.sos.mo.gov/elections. You can find out more about the amendments and propositions on the ballot, as well as a list of candidates and polling locations.

If you have questions on Election Day, ask a poll worker at your local polling location for assistance or clarification. Poll workers are there to help elections run smoothly and to help you with problems.

Please take time to learn about the issues and candidates on the ballot in November and also talk to your friends, family and neighbors about these changes in the election laws. The polls are open on Tuesday, November 7, from 6:00am until 7:00pm.

So, don't forget: bring your identification, vote for each candidate of your choice individually and make your vote count on November 7.
