American Red Cross Shelters More Than 800 People Over 3 Nights
and Serves More Than 5,200 Meals and Snacks
Shelters remain open in St. Louis City; St. Louis County; Belleville, IL; and Farmington, MO

        St. Louis, Monday, December 4, 2006 - The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has sheltered 823 people over three nights and served 5,241 meals and snacks to shelter guests since opening five emergency shelters in the wake of a severe winter storm and widespread power outages. The Red Cross is partnering with emergency management officials and many other local municipalities and agencies to provide assistance, including the Southern Baptists, Missouri Convention to prepare as many as 1,000 meals a day.

        Four Red Cross shelters remain open 24-hours to provide safe refuge from the cold temperatures for those who have lost power. At each of these full-service facilities, the Red Cross is providing assistance for emergency needs that includes shelter, food and health services. As assessment continues, additional shelters will be opened if the need arises.

        Red Cross shelters that are no longer needed and have closed include the following:* Jefferson County, MO - Arnold Recreation Center - 1695 Missouri State Road - Arnold, MO
