China Night 2007 at the University of Missouri-Columbia on March 10
The long awaiting China Night is coming to Jesse Auditorium at the University of Missouri-Columbia again on Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 pm. This is the third year that the Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars (FACSS) at MU had organized such incredible international cultural event on campus.
China Night 2007 showcases vivid Chinese performing arts rooted in the more than 5,000 years of Chinese history. A glimpse of Chinese culture will be presented that evening through traditional Chinese dances, ethnic folk dances from China's diverse regions such as Tibet, Mongolia, and Uighur, as well as fashion moments, folk music, martial arts exhibitions, musical presentations with ancient musical instruments, and vocal performances.
As the reality of globalization unfolds, the plurality of cultural spheres yields to a larger concept of mankind where cultures are no longer defined by nor confined within national boundaries. America, with its multi-ethnic heritage and its dynamic fusion of different cultures, creates an environment that both values and embraces diversity.
China Night 2007 manifests the magnificence and profundity of Chinese culture, an aspect of true artistic beauty representative of Chinese civilization, "but most importantly, the evening's program seeks to further promote the understanding of Chinese culture, to encourage and advance international exchange, and to foster a cross-cultural dialogue for the greater enrichment of an emerging global culture in our community," Lampo Leong, Faculty Advisor for FACSS, emphasized. Dr. Handy Williamson, Vice Provost for International Programs and Strategic Initiatives, wrote in the Foreword of the program brochure: "This event represents one of the milestones of our cultural celebrations of the year."
China Night 2007 will be co-directed by Li Yang, Lampo Leong and Yuhong He. Li Yang is visiting from China, who was formerly Professor of Guangdong University of Business and Law and director of the University's performing arts troupe. She will be the choreographer and rehearsal instructor for the dance program. Lampo Leong, an Associate professor of Art at MU will be in charge of the stage lighting design, the design of the poster and a 24-page color brochure. Steve Yang, an MU biomedical sciences Research Associate Professor, will be in charge of the vocal performances. And Yuhong He, an MU doctoral student and the President of FACSS, will coordinate the entire production. The majority of the performers are MU international students from China. Highlights of the program include guest performers from Washington University in Saint Louis, and Pu Ting Shih Kung Fu Academy in Columbia.
This gala festival is the result of the untiring work of the FACSS committee members and the dedication of the dancers and performers, as well as the supports from many warm-hearted organizations and businesses on the MU campus and in the city of Columbia, without which, this event would not have been possible.
