        The opening concert of the University City Symphony Orchestra's 48thseason features well-known St. Louis pianist Chiann-Li Yawitzplaying a rarely-performed concerto.

        Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1 is an underplayed but richlylyrical and syncopated early work showing the influence of his mentorTschiakowsky -- and also the student's independence.

        Dr. Yawitz has performed extensively in the U.S. and in her nativeTaiwan, having shared the stage with Jean-Pierre Rampal and theKronos Quartet, and having premiered several works, including aconcerto of Joan Tower.

        Also on the program, and much better-known, is the Hary YanosSuite by Zoltan Kodaly, from his 1926 opera of the same name. Itssix movements recount the tall tales of an Austrian Army officer whoclaims to have defeated Napoleon single-handedly.
