Help make History in the New Year

A Column from Secretary of State Robin Carnahan

As you are traveling to see relatives or relaxing at home this holiday, you might take time to think about the fast-approaching Presidential Primary in Missouri, set for February 5, 2008. In my family we always took our responsibility as voters and citizens seriously, and I hope that you and your loved ones consider the candidates and pick who you'd like to see as a presidential nominee on February 5.

Missourians will join voters in 19 other states on February 5, on what is known as "Super Tuesday," to cast a vote for the candidate they think should be their party's nominee.

Our state has long played an important role in Presidential elections; many even call us a bellwether state. For instance, Missouri has gone with the winner of every Presidential election since 1904 with only one exception, bringing about the phrase, "As Missouri goes, so goes the nation."

During your time off over the holidays and in between traveling, shopping and family get-togethers, please do not to forget that you must be registered to vote no later than January 9, 2008, in order to participate in the upcoming presidential primary.

You can request a voter registration card from my office or locally through your county clerk or elections office. To find out how to contact your local county clerk or election offices, please visit www.sos.mo.gov/elections/countyclerks.

Also, with each new year comes fresh resolutions and personal goals. If one of your resolutions includes getting more involved in your community, you should consider volunteering to be a poll worker. County clerks and election boards constantly need new volunteers to help, and it is a great way to aid our democracy and your community. If you would like to volunteer to be a poll worker, or if you would just like more information about the program, please visit www.sos.mo.gov/pollworker.

As the holidays wrap up and we transition into a new year, I want to wish all you the best and assure you that you can expect more great service and assistance from the Secretary of State's office. 2008 will be an exciting year for all of us, and I hope that you participate in the democratic process by voting in our elections.
