CHESTERFIELD, Mo. -- Kumon Math and Reading, the world's largest after-school education program, is turning 50 this year.And locally, Julie Chan, owner of one of the largest and most successful Kumon Centers in North America, will celebrate 20 years.
"It is an honor to have helped so many children reach their potential," Chan said. "I opened the center because I saw how the program helped my own children. Twenty years later, I'm proud to have made a positive impact in the community."
Chan, who owns the seventh largest Kumon Center in North America, said she is "expanding the location to provide a more comfortable learning environment for our students and also anticipation of future growth."
From its humble beginnings in Osaka, Japan in 1958 to currently reaching millions of children in 45 countries, Kumon has grown exponentially.
Over the past five years, the average Kumon Center enrollment increased 55 percent, and overall, the company has 80,000 more U.S. students than in 2002.
