The European Union in a statement released on May 26 welcomed the positive momentum given to the development of cross-Strait relations in the inaugural speech by Taiwan's new president, Ma Ying-jeou, and in the statement by Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council.
The EU said in the statement that it believes that the establishment of a new administration in Taiwan provides a unique opportunity for the two sides to make further progress in their practical relations and opens the possibility for them to take positive steps towards the resumption of a meaningful dialogue. These, it said, will be of benefit to the people on both sides of the Strait and would enhance regional peace and stability.
The EU welcomed the willingness of both sides to take up these opportunities. It also reiterated its One China policy and its firm support for a peaceful resolution of the Taiwan question. |
