EVOKING TANG by Qiu Xiaolong NAMED FINALIST IN 2008 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AWARDS

PenUltimate Press, Inc. is proud to announce that Evoking Tang by Qiu Xiaolong was a finalist in the 2008 Benjamin Franklin AwardTM for the Poetry/Literary Criticism category. The Benjamin Franklin AwardsTM are sponsored by PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association, and celebrate excellence in editorial and design for titles published in 2007. Judges for the Awards come from all areas of the industry: major newspaper and trade media reviewers, bookstore and library buyers and reviewers, and noncompeting publishers, artists and writers.

Evoking Tang is a bilingual collection offering English translations of more than 70 short classic Chinese poems from the great poets of the first century Tang dynasty. As judges of the Benjamin Franklin Awards wrote: "Evoking Tang is an anthology of classic Chinese poetry and the classics have never sounded finer. Read the lines, enjoy the...illustrations and, even if you do not read Chinese, you can appreciate the alternating pages of English translations...." "Exceptional design-cover and interior. This book [is] top-notch from front to back."

In Evoking Tang, Qiu breathes new life into the works of the Tang dynasty master poets. The sample poems in the anthology are comparable in importance, for English-speaking readers, to those of Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and Longfellow. Qiu translates them into English remaining faithful to their original meaning and imagery and rendering the beloved poems enjoyable to readers. The book includes 30 illustrations of Chinese paintings to aid interpretation of the poems and to stir the imagination of the readers as they enter the poetic world.

Awards were presented on Thursday, May 29, 2008, on the eve of BookExpo America 2008, during the 2008 Publishing University in Los Angeles, CA, at which time winners were recognized for setting the standards and the pace for the publishing industry.

To request a copy of Evoking Tang, or for more information, contact Winnie Sullivan at (314) 862-3842, e-mail: penultim@swbell.net.

A native of Shanghai, who came to the United States in 1988 on a Ford Foundation Fellowship, Qiu was already a distinguished poet and scholar before arriving at Washington University in St. Louis, where he obtained a doctorate in comparative literature. He has been the recipient of a host of awards for his poetry, including the Missouri Biennial Award and the Prairie Schooner Readers Choice Award.
