The St. Louis Zoo will begin construction on a bridge spanning over Wells Drive, linking the zoo's south gate with the pay parking lot nearby. This bridge will be the centerpiece in a larger project that will include a resigned lot, more animal sculptures, a pond and a waterfall. The project is funded by a $5 million earmark obtained in 2006 by Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond, and a $2.5 million gift from the charitable division of Wachovia Corp. The bridge is the answer to zoo visitors' questions regarding the safety of Wells Drive. Construction will be completed next year and will feature a 19-foot-tall elephant statue along with other sculptures. |
