St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association President and CEO Dick Fleming says the group is conducting a study to learn how much traffic cargo carriers could expect if St. Louis is made a hub for cargo flights from China. The study will look at the profitability of the imports and exports of the Midwestern U.S. According to the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank's Regional Economist magazine, Missouri exported $1 billion of goods to China last year and Illinois nearly $2 billion, with both states' China shipments growing quickly at an annual rate of 32 percent for Missouri and 18 percent for Illinois between 1989 and 2007. |
