【時報訊】聖路易華盛頓大學一棟命名為Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer之教學大樓，10月29日舉行破土典禮。這棟佔地15萬平方呎之現代化建築，將緊鄰生物醫學工程系Whitaker大樓而建，作為華大能源系、環保系、化工系及生醫工程系之用，提供辦公室、教室及華大再生能源國際中心多間實驗室等，此外，這座教學大樓還有可供全球75位人士同時上課研討及會議所需各項視訊設備之遠距教學教室。整棟大樓預計2010年夏末完工。
多年來，Steve and Kimmy Brauer是華大忠實的支持者和贊助人，他們捐出數個獎學金及提供教授研究獎，華大生物醫學工程系主任殷起彭即是這項教授研究獎第一屆得獎人。Steve Brauer目前擔任華大工學院國家委員會主席及華大監事會主席，在擔任工學院主席時，他領導委員會在1995年計劃並促成在華大創立新的生物醫學工程學系。Steve Brauer曾任美國駐比利時大使，返美後，繼續在聖路易主持Hunter工程公司及全力支持華盛頓大學各項發展。
1997年，Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer傑出教授殷起彭(Dr. Frank Yin)應聘自Johns Hopkins大學來到華盛頓大學，擔任新成立之生物醫學工程系系主任，在短短數年間，殷起彭教授推動系務與世界級醫學院緊密結合，帶領華大生醫工程系成為美國生醫工程界頂尖學系，華大生物醫學工程系目前有16位全職教授，超過300位大學本科生及100位研究生，是工學院最大的一個學系，佔大學部工學院學生人數和研究支出之40%。Brauer教學大樓的破土動工興建將使得生醫學工程系的發展更上一層樓。
The Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer Hall Groundbreaking for Engineering at Washington University
On Oct. 29 a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer Hall for Engineering on the Washington University campus. This 150,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research facility will adjoin the Whitaker Hall for Biomedical Engineering and will house the Department of Energy, Environment and Chemical Engineering as well as the expansion space for the Department of Biomedical Engineering. It will house the EECE departmental offices, offices for the dean of the School of Engineering, some teaching spaces for both departments as well as laboratories for the new International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability. Additionally, it will have a 75 person distance learning classroom to facilitate the anticipated global research and teaching activities for its occupants and their collaborators. Occupancy is anticipated by the end of summer 2010.
Steve and Kimmy Brauer have been staunch and dedicated supporters of the university for many years. They donated several scholarships as well as an endowed professorship, whose inaugural recipient is Frank Yin, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Steve is the chair of the engineering school's national council and chairman-elect of the university's Board of Trustees. During his previous tenure as chair of the engineering school's national council, he led the efforts in 1995 to plan and establish a new Department of Biomedical Engineering. After serving as ambassador to Belgium, he returned to St. Louis and resumed his leadership at Hunter Engineering Company in St. Louis as well as his commitments to the university.
Frank Yin, The Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, was recruited to Washington University in 1997 from Johns Hopkins University to lead the new department. In the space of a few short years, working closely with the world-class School of Medicine, he has built this program into one of the leading programs in the country. It currently has 16 full-time faculty, more than 300 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students. It is the largest department in the School of Engineering, accounting for 40% of the undergraduate students and research expenditures. This new building will provide much-needed space for continued growth of the department.
