Chu's parents were Chinese immigrants who came to the United States to further their education in engineering and economics. Chu was raised in Missouri and received his doctorate degree from University of California at Berkeley in 1976. He has worked as the head of the quantum electronics research department for AT&T Bell Laboratories and chair of the physics department at Stanford University before his transition to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
