The City of University City is excited to announce their first bi-lingual Chinese Intern through the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University. Julie Zhang started work on her Masters in August of 2008. She is working in the City Manager’s office and has been assigned to provide outreach within the Asian community. She will complete a bi-lingual community directory as well as City forms and information pieces.

Julie Feier, City Manager of University City, identified the need to develop bi-lingual literature in conjunction with the Chinese community located on Olive Blvd. She indicated that we have one of the largest concentrations of Asian- owned businesses in the region and we do not have a single piece of bilingual literature available to assist them. She went on to say, "They are an important part of our community and I hope that they will take advantage of having Ms. Zhang on our staff through the end of the semester. She is a real asset and her enthusiasm is contagious!"
Ms. Zhang hopes that residents and business owners will contact her to share their ideas, "I really want to use my journalism and social work skill to empower the Chinese community and help their voice be better heard. We have an opportunity to facilitate changes in civic engagement between Chinese communities and the City Administration." Before Ms. Zhang came to University City, she had been a reporter of Hong Kong Phoenix Weekly which was one of the top tier news magazines in Mainland China. She traveled around the country and Southeast Asia countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for investigative reporting.
