There are many ways to promote sustainability and green living. If you are looking for a unique way to celebrate the environment this spring, look no further than St. Louis Community College's new green campus in Wildwood. The College is hosting "A Different Kind of Green" Festival, a free day-long Art Exhibition and Green Living Expo to bring its focus on sustaining the environment to the public. This exciting exhibition and festival is supported by the Regional Arts Commission and the St. Louis Community College Foundation. Event co-sponsors include the Cities of Chesterfield, Ellisville, Eureka, Pacific and Wildwood.
The event will begin early in the week with a special "green themed" art show comprised of works by talented students from local high schools including Lafayette, Marquette, Eureka , Pacific and John F. Kennedy. These special art pieces will be on display at the College from April 13-18, 2009 and will be judged by Katherine Rhodes Fields, a noted artist with an education in environmental art from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to select their favorite piece of art by voting for the "People's Choice Award".
The week will culminate on Saturday with a special day of fun and educational events for all ages. Musicians from the high schools will join their fellow artists and will perform throughout the afternoon. Master gardeners and naturalists will offer seminars on a wide variety of topics including composting, native plants, and butterflies and hummingbirds. Artists with varied backgrounds will be offering demonstrations to the public, all providing visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about green living. Demonstrations will include book-making from recycled materials and many more activities. But the fun won't stop there! Visitors to the event will be busy with many hands-on activities.
The public is encouraged to bring their "E-scrap" [outdated computers, printers, scanners, routers, corded and cordless phones, answering machines, battery back-ups and TVs] to be recycled through Earthbound Recycling [fees apply and cash and checks will be accepted]. Children will be delighted by "The Raptor Project" a group of talented musicians and their avian friends from the World Bird Sanctuary. And everyone will be able to explore the College's award winning green campus through a scavenger hunt. A variety of vendors will be on campus promoting green products ranging from homebuilding and landscaping to clothes made from bamboo to products for the body and handmade crafts. The festival will be held on Saturday, April 18th. Gardening seminars will begin at 9:00 am. Vendors will be open and festival activities will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
