Shelley Welsch, a former Councilmember in University City, has announced that she will formally kick-off her second run for the Mayor office on Wednesday, May 20th from 5p-8p in Pavilion #1 in University City's Heman Park.
"I've found that I enjoy being a person in private life, focusing on things that are important to me and my family," says Welsch. "But I made the decision to run again because I believe in public service; feel I owe more to this community in which we have chosen to live; believe I have the leadership abilities this city needs in these extremely challenging times; and was approached by many, many people asking me to make one more go for it."
Welsch says her priorities for her term in office will be to work with other members of the Council to improve the city's financial situation; to strive to expand business activity throughout the community, especially along Olive Boulevard; build a respectful and collaborative relationship with the School District of University City; and bring the diverse University City community together, for work and play, and make sure residents have a say in the future of this community.
During her time on the Council from 2002-2006 Welsch recommended the formation of the Advisory Board for Economic Progress, an appointed group that discussed ways to increase business development throughout University City. She was also the guiding force behind the Proposition K Citizens Committee, a group of University City residents that gathered public input for the design of the Centennial Commons.
The public is invited to this kick-off event to meet candidate Welsch, and also to meet and talk local politics, issues and concerns with other University City residents. Entrance to Heman Park will be off Midland Boulevard between Olive and Vernon. Refreshments will be served, and all are invited to bring a dish to share if they wish.
