WHO: Projecting the raw power of flamenco, sizzling Jazz Guitar, hypnotic Latin rhythms, and energized Cuban pop, the most successful French musical outfit ever are bringing their intoxicating sound to St. Louis. The Gipsy Kings are that rare thing - a household name famous solely for their amazing music. Having brought Rumba Catalana, a pop-oriented version of traditional flamenco music, to international audiences, the Gipsy Kings continue wowing audiences from the United States to China to Persia. Hugely popular, the Gipsy Kings have sold 18 million albums worldwide.
Together for 40 years, the Gipsy Kings became an international success with the 1988 self-titled album Gipsy Kings, which spent 40 weeks on the charts in the United States. Their 1993 album Love and Liberte won the band a Latin Grammy for Best Pop Album. The 1995 compilation "The Best of the Gipsy Kings" went platinum, and another 8 albums went gold.
The Gipsy Kings are made up of two related families: five brothers from the Reyes family and three brothers from the Baliardo family. The members were born to French parents, who were themselves Gypsies forced to flee Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. Learning from and playing alongside their fathers and grandfathers, the brothers are Gypsies at heart - the proud descendants of an ancient people who seduced the world with music and dance.
