Years of hard work and civic commitment by numerous individuals, businesses and organizations in this community to revitalize downtown are paying off. The just-published 2009 Mid-Year Housing Update, produced by the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis and the Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District, reveals some very good news for St. Louis, namely, residential population in downtown St. Louis grew 3% in the first 6 months of 2009; some 400 residents were added in just the first half of this year.
This Update includes information on all housing located within the 2.95 square-mile downtown area, bound by the Mississippi River on the east, Jefferson Avenue on the west, Cass Avenue on the north and Chouteau Avenue on the south. The report shows that more than 5,000 new residents have moved into the area since the year 2000, bringing the total to 12,409 residents as of June. The Washington Avenue corridor and area near the Old Post Office saw much of the recent growth.While 2009 clearly has been a difficult year for development throughout the region and across the country, downtown St. Louis has more than held its own. |
