Dr. Peter H. Raven, President of the Missouri Botanical Garden Receives CAS Award

        St. Louis, MO - Dr. Peter H. Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden has received the 2009 Award for International Scientific Cooperation from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The award was presented to Raven at CAS' annual conference held Jan. 25 through 27 in Beijing.

        Initiated in 2007, the Award for International Scientific Cooperation of the CAS is to commend and honor those eminent foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to facilitating cooperation with CAS in science and technology, in an attempt to strengthen CAS's science and technology innovation capacity, and lead to improvement in its research performance, education and training, management, and reputation in the international scientific community.

        "Peter Raven's outstanding contributions to science and technology, and his enthusiastic collaboration with CAS has been genuinely appreciated and commended by his Chinese colleagues," said professor Dr. Ing Lu Yongxiang, president of the CAS.

        Peter Raven is one of the world's leading botanists and advocates of conservation, biodiversity, and a sustainable environment. For nearly 40 years, he has headed the Missouri Botanical Garden, an institution he nurtured into a world-class center for botanical research and education, and horticultural display. Described by Time magazine as a "Hero for the Planet," Raven champions research around the world to preserve endangered plants.

        "It is an honor to receive such a distinguished award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, especially considering the size and scope of the Academy," said Raven. "My work with the Chinese Academy of Sciences is a highlight of my career."

        Raven is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the prestigious International Prize for Biology from the government of Japan and the U.S. National Medal of Science. He has held Guggenheim and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowships. Raven was a member of President Bill Clinton's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. He also served for 12 years as the home secretary of the National Academy of Science. In addition to the CAS, Raven is a member of the academies of science in Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, India, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, the U.K., and several other countries.
