Chesterfield Mayor John Nations, Chairman of the Proposition A campaign, was RCGA special guest at the regular monthly February RCGA Board meeting, where he urged St. Louis area companies to take an active role in helping to pass the ballot proposal in St. Louis County on April 6th. Noting that a strong transit system is vital to the sustainability and economic growth of the entire bi-state region, the RCGA Board unanimously approved a resolution supporting Prop A.
RCGA Board member Steve Lipstein, a member of the Steering Committee for Prop A, discussed the critical importance of transit to the region as he introduced Mayor Nations. Prop A calls for a one-half cent sales tax increase for operations, maintenance and expansion of MetroLink, MetroBus, and disabled and senior public transportation. The new tax would generate approximately $75 million annually.
Revenues generated from the tax would be used in the following areas:
Restoring job access lost during the 2009 service cutbacksImproving MetroBus services and frequencyRestoring Call-A-Ride accessIncreasing MetroLink frequencyPassenger improvements such as security, lighting, shelters, benches, and transit centersTechnological improvements in fare collection, computer-aided dispatch, automated vehicle location and web-based applicationsMaintenance of existing transit facilitiesExpansion of MetroLink ¡@ |
