Slay, Jones, Hamm-Niebruegge head to China to court airlines

St. Louis leaders travelled to Beijing last Friday (03/19) to meet with Chinese airlines as part of their ongoing efforts to make the region a hub for trade with China.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay; Michael Jones, policy adviser to St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley; Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, director of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport; and Dick Fleming, president and chief executive of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, are on the weeklong trip.

"We are going to try to formalize a working arrangement between ourselves and hopefully several Chinese airlines to do a joint study to determine under what conditions they would fly into Lambert," said Jones, chairman of the Midwest-China Hub Commission.

The group also hopes to meet with Chinese businesses looking to expand and start operations in Missouri, he said.

Last year, Lambert officials selected a developer of air cargo distribution warehouses to develop 76 acres at the airport to bolster trade efforts, particularly with China.

The airport commission approved an agreement with Aeroterm LLC of Annapolis, Md., to develop $40 million in cargo facilities on the site of a former Boeing Corp. aircraft fabrication facility and office complex at the airport.
