WHAT: September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month and Dave Sinclair Automotive Group and SSM Cancer Care will be offering three free prostate screenings. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the Dave Sinclair Automotive Group showrooms, pick up educational information and have refreshments before and after their blood draw. SSM Breast Care will also be on-hand if any women would like to receive a free breast cancer risk assessment.

WHY: In 2009, Missouri reported 3,620 new cases of prostate cancer, an increase of 43 percent from 2008. (*All prostate cancer statistics are 2009 estimates from the American Cancer Society.) The founder of Dave Sinclair Automotive Group, the late Dave Sinclair, Sr. a prostate cancer survivor, credited the Prostate Screening Assessment test with saving his life. He was a very strong advocate of these screenings - encouraging his family, friends and the general public to attend one of these events.
A 2010 report from the American Cancer Society also showed that the Missouri death rate to cancer in general as higher than the national average - meaning that more people might not be finding the disease in the earlier stages when it’s easier to treat. This is why public events like SSM Cancer Care screenings are such an important means to detect abnormalities and provide vital education that can save lives. |
