Leaders from China, St. Louis meet about plan to turn Lambert into hub

A delegation of Chinese officials toured Lambert-St. Louis International Airport on Monday on a trip to determine whether they should establish a trade hub there.

Officials from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, China Air Transport Association and Chinese cargo airlines, arrived Sunday night and on Monday morning, took a tour of the airport with County Executive Charlie Dooley, airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge and members of the Midwest China Hub Commission.

After lunch, the delegation is scheduled to visit the Missouri Department of Transportation to get an overview of the area highways, ports and rail system from Tom Blair, MoDOT's St. Louis district engineer, and Multimodal Operations Director Brian Weiler, said Nancy G. Schnoebelen, vice president of marketing and communications for the St. Louis County Economic Council.

The visitors will then hear a freight flow comparison between St. Louis and Chicago from James Noble, a professor in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department at the University of Missouri.

Tonight, the St. Louis Area Shipper's Council will host a dinner at the Four Seasons, which will include St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, Dooley and Rich McClure, President of Unigroup, the Fenton-based operator of United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit. Executives from St. Louis pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts and Sigma-Aldrich, a St. Louis life-science and specialty chemical company, are also expected to attend.

On Tuesday, the delegation plans to visit Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill., and meet with Ed Monser, president and chief operating officer of Emerson, which has network power, process management, industrial automation, climate technologies and appliance and tools businesses.

On Wednesday, the visitors are expected to meet with Sigma-Aldrich President and CEO Jai Nagarkatti, and then tour the Arch and the Missouri Botanical Garden.

On Thursday, the delegation will meet with Dick Fleming, president and CEO of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, discuss exports and air cargo trends, and attend a lunch with Missouri Economic Development Director David Kerr and developer Chris McKee, president of the Missouri Partnership.

Chinese officials also will meet with freight forwarders CEVA Logistics, Phoenix International, Kuehne + Nagel, Allstates WorldCargo Inc., DHL Global Forwarding and NNR Global Logistics, before attending a reception at Bryan Cave law firm and a St. Louis Blues hockey game.

The delegation plans to leave Friday.
