Emerson again topped the St. Louis Business Journal's list of the area's largest locally based international companies, ranked by fiscal 2009 international sales. Emerson reported $11.6 billion of the multinational manufacturing and technology company's $20.9 billion in total sales came from outside the country.
The rest of the top five also remained unchanged from last year. Monsanto Co. again ranked second with $5.3 billion in international revenue while Boeing Defense, Space & Security placed third with $5 billion in overseas sales. Engineering firm Jacobs ranked fourth, posting $4.1 billion in international sales, and Reinsurance Group of America ranked fifth with $2.7 billion.
The majority of listmakers - 19 of 25 - reported a decrease in international revenue compared with the prior year. Of the top five companies, only two - Boeing Defense, Space & Security, a St. Louis-based unit of Chicago-based Boeing Co., and Reinsurance Group of America - reported increases during the same period.
Savvis Inc., ranked 25th, represents a new addition to this year's list while ESCO Technologies, Zoltek and Alberici Corp., ranked 21st last year, just failed to make the 25-company cutoff.
