In forty seven days, Fair U City! will open in University City's Heman Park, reviving a tradition of a community carnival that has been dormant for a number of years.
A group of University City volunteers, calling themselves Celebrate U City! is organizing the carnival, which is designed to attract University City residents as well as people from throughout the St. Louis region.
"We are anxious to put on a community event for all our residents, but especially for our youth." said Melcine Henderson, the volunteer chair of the festival. "We think it's important for people to meet and have fun with neighbors they might not otherwise meet. We think Fair U City! will be a new city center for a couple of days."
Fair U City! will be held on Sunday, May 29th from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Monday, May 30th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The carnival will take place in University City's Heman Park. Fairgoers will enter the park off Midland Boulevard, just south of Olive Boulevard.
There will be a community parade on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. And there is an art contest on the Celebrate U City! theme for children from pre-school through high school.
Profits from the fair will be used as seed money for next year's carnival. Organizers have also talked of setting up a University City Foundation, which would provide small grants to local non-profit organizations. Profits from the fair may also be used for that purpose.
Carnival volunteers are looking for sponsorship support from local businesses and individuals, to cover the costs related to Fair U City! including the cost of a fireworks display that they hope to present on Sunday evening.
There are still spots available for food vendors; carnival game vendors; and community booth. The carnival rides will be provided by Tinsley Amusements.
