St. Louis, MO, May 19, 2011 - Missouri exports increased 18 percent in the first quarter of 2011 according to data released today by World Trade Center Saint Louis. The total dollar value of Missouri exports in the first quarter was $3.4 billion, compared to $2.9 billion in 2010. Canada, Mexico, China, and Korea continue to top the list of international markets.
"This is a great sign! Missouri export growth in the first quarter of 2011 was on pace with the national average of 18 percent," said Tim Nowak, executive director at the World Trade Center Saint Louis. "We also continue to see explosive growth for Missouri products in Asian markets with China recording 35 percent export growth and Korea recording 100 percent export growth in the first quarter of 2011."
The top products exported include: coal, pork, automobiles and chemicals.
"Missouri’s strong export performance in Asia provides the justification that our efforts to establish economic ties with China and the rest of Asia are a home-run strategy for Missouri companies and workers," said St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley. "Through the steady and focused efforts of the Midwest-China Hub Commission, World Trade Center Saint Louis, St. Louis County Economic Council and all of our regional partners, Missouri is securing its place as a serious force in the global economy."
