The United States Flag Codes states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." (Section ?76. Respect for flag)
On this Memorial Day, May 30th, Boy Scouts in University City will conduct a Flag Retirement Ceremony and will properly dispose of any used, worn or soiled flags that St. Louis area residents bring to the ceremony. There will be no charge for this service.
The Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held:
Monday, May 30, 201112:00 pm. Heman Park / Midland just south of Olive Boulevard
The ceremony itself will take only 5-10 minutes. However, the Scouts will continue with the burning until all flags are properly disposed of in the fire pit that will be dug specifically for this purpose.
